Jukpi

Description

Jukpi (sometimes anglicized as ” Chukpi ” or ” Chugpi “) means “bamboo clacker”. It is an instrument used in Korea to mark the beginning and end of Buddhist ceremonies and meditation sessions. Traditionally, the instrument is a hollow bamboo stick split down the middle, which makes a distinct clacking sound when struck. The jukpi is typically clapped three times to signal the beginning and end of a ceremony or meditation session, and during formal meals (clapped once during walking meditation). The instrument is held in one hand and struck against the open other hand to produce a clapping sound.

We offer TWO different Jukpi styles:

1. PREMIUM Jukpi: The production of the traditional handmade bamboo Jukpi is extremely time-consuming and requires an ancient skill and sensitivity that only a few monks in Korea still possess today. The bamboo must be selected, cut, dried and matured by hand based on its maturity and thickness. It is then heated, shaped and modified. The sound of this Jukpi is incomparable! It is not manufactured by any company, but is handmade in Korea today by just one or two people. From August 2023, the Zen Center Online Store will have the honor of presenting the work of an experienced meditation practitioner who is making these unique pieces available exclusively for Zen Center Regensburg e.V.
2. REGULAR Jukpi: This is the version used by most meditation groups in Korea. It is more readily available as it is made in higher quality. is made in Korea from durable apricot wood, looks like bamboo and is marked with the Chinese character for “Sky”.It really is quite a beautiful piece. Comes with a string ribbon for hanging. The sound of this jukpi is also excellent. This version of the Korean jukpi is used in all centers of the Kwan Um Zen school, for example.
